Penny Simpson is a fiction writer and deviser of creative research projects exploring culture and human rights. Both her writing and her research based practice have developed out of her career as a journalist working with organisations including the BBC and British Council.
Her recent short fiction has been Highly Commended in the Bath Short Story Award (2023); long listed for the V.S. Pritchett Short Story Award (2021), and the Mslexia Short Story Competition (2020); short listed for the Fish Anthology Prize (2021) and Bridport Short Story Prize (2019) and Highly Commended in the Manchester Fiction Prize (2019).
Between 2020-2021, she was Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Arts, Birkbeck, University of London. Since 2023, she has been creative writing lead on WISE (Wellness Improvement Service) a project co-funded by NHS and Arts Council Wales, designing and running workshops to support patients living with chronic pain and long-term health conditions.
Currently, she works as Lecturer in Literature at the University of Essex.
