Penny Simpson is a fiction writer and deviser of creative research projects exploring culture and human rights. Both her writing and her research based practice have developed out of her career as a journalist working with organisations including the BBC and British Council.
Her recent short fiction has been Highly Commended in the Bath Short Story Award (2023); long listed for the V.S. Pritchett Short Story Award (2021), and the Mslexia Short Story Competition (2020); short listed for the Fish Anthology Prize (2021) and Bridport Short Story Prize (2019) and Highly Commended in the Manchester Fiction Prize (2019).
Between 2020-2021, she was Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Arts, Birkbeck, University of London. In 2023, she was creative writing lead on the WISE Wellness Hub Project, NHS, designing and running a series of creative writing workshops to support patients living with chronic pain and long-term health conditions.
